The Alchemist is the first book written by Brazilian author Paolo Coelho.  It became famous when Bill Clinton was photographed reading the book during his presidency, and it has since become an instant classic.  The novel, narrated by its Shepard protagonist, is a tribute to following your heart and overcoming those discouraging voices that tell you your dreams are unrealistic.  I knew little about the book until a friend gushed about it and then drove me to Barnes and Noble, walked me inside, bought the book (from a cashier who also sung its praises), and handed it to me.  “This book will change your life,” he said as he placed the bag in my hands.
